uPVC windows are very durable and they are suitable for all types of weathers, but as with many things, dirt and dust can build up over time. If left uncleaned or unmaintained, your windows can appear dark and gloomy which will have a negative effect on the appearance of your home. Luckily, one of the main benefits of owning uPVC windows is that they are low maintenance and very easy to clean. To help you get started with maintaining your windows, here are a few tips.
Cleaning The Window Frame
Starting off with the window frame – ideally, you would want to clean the frame at least twice a year. The more regularly you clean the window frame, the easier the task will be each time. To begin cleaning the frame, open the windows and use a brush to break down and loosen any dirt or dust. Then, you can use a vacuum to clear the remaining dirt. If your vacuum has a brush nozzle, then you can use this to prevent scratching the frame.
After you have cleared the dirt, you can then mix some washing up liquid with warm water and use a soft sponge or cloth to wipe down the window frames. Avoid using scouring pads as these can scratch the uPVC, especially if your window frame has a decorative finish. Make sure you also wipe around the very edges where the window sits inside the outer frame. If you are using a cloth, then make sure that you don’t use a coloured cloth as the dye may come off onto the uPVC frame.
Cleaning The Glass
As for cleaning the glass itself, you should aim to clean them four to eight times a year. Dirt and dust are more noticeable on the glass which is why it might require slightly more maintenance than the frame. When cleaning the glass, make sure you avoid direct sunlight on the window as it can leave a streaky finish.
You can start the process of cleaning the glass by rubbing it down with a damp cloth to break down and get rid of the dirt. Once you have completed the initial wipe down, you can then use glass cleaner and a high-quality cloth to thoroughly clean the window and restore the shine. Alternatively, you can use microfibre cloths or e-cloths which are perfect for cleaning glass.
Regular Maintenance
Keeping your windows clean and operating smoothly is all part of the maintenance. The working parts on the windows may need to be oiled every now and then to make sure that they work at their best. You should expect to oil the working parts every six months, however, ensure that you avoid getting oil onto the glass.
These are the following moving parts which may need to be oiled:
Hinges – To lubricate the hinges, simply open the window and make sure that the hinges are still. Then, spray some oil onto the friction hinges. If the hinges do feel loose after you have sprayed them with oil, then you may want to re-tighten the hinge with a tightening screw.
Handles – For the handles, keep the window closed and spray some oil onto the window key. Then, insert the key into the handle lock and gently wiggle the key in and out to ensure adequate oil.
Locks – To oil the locking system, open the window and spray some oil onto the locking strip. After that, simply wipe away the excess oil.
Following these simple maintenance tips for your uPVC windows will help to prevent decay and long-term failure.
